Reentry Council seeks interested individuals to serve on new local Sentencing Commission

The Reentry Council is seeking interested individuals to be appointed to the San Francisco Sentencing Commission, a newly created advisory body charged with encouraging the development of criminal sentencing strategies that reduce recidivism, prioritize public safety and victim protection, emphasize fairness, employ evidence-based practices, and efficiently utilize San Francisco’s criminal justice resources. The San Francisco Sentencing Commission will be chaired by the District Attorney’s Office, and will be advisory to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors. Membership includes one member chosen by the Reentry Council who is a member of a non-profit organization that works with ex-offenders. If you are interested in this appointment, please complete a Statement of Interest, which must be received by no later than 5:00pm on Tuesday April 10, 2012. Reentry Council submits letters to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors

On March 6^th, the Reentry Council submitted a letter to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors urging them to support AB1831 which would require cities and counties across California to adopt hiring practices that provide a fair opportunity for people with a record of arrests and convictions to seek employment opportunities. The Council also asked the Mayor and Board of Supervisors to support SB210, which would expand the eligibility criteria for CDCR’s community treatment program available to incarcerated mothers with young children. Also on March 6^th, the Reentry Council expressed its disappointment in the Secretary of State’s December 2011 analysis that found that individuals impacted by Realignment are not eligible to vote. The Reentry Council asked that the Mayor and Board of Supervisors support further legal analysis in order to identify possible actions that would ensure that individuals impacted by Realignment are afforded all appropriate rights, including the right to vote. On the following day, March 7^th, All of Us or None, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, the League of Women Voters, and an individual petitioned the First District Court of Appeals to clarify that individuals impacted by Realignment have the right to vote. Reentry Council appoints Macio D. Lyons as member of WiCAC

On March 6^th, the Reentry Council appointed Macio D. Lyons as a member of the Workforce Investment Community Advisory Committee. Congratulations to Macio, and thank you to all of the committed individuals who stepped forward to apply for the seat. Additional appointments to the WiCAC are currently available through the Board of Supervisors.
